Part 3:
I keep coming back to that moment — not because it was dramatic, but because it wasn’t. Nothing about how we talk to each other changed after it. He didn’t know he’d said anything significant. I didn’t tell him he had. Life just kept going, the way it does, and I quietly filed away the fact that whatever fantasy I’d let myself half-build was never going to be a real option.
And the strange thing is, I’m not devastated by it. It’s not all-consuming. It’s more like a low hum in the background — a small, specific sadness that shows up sometimes when he calls me sunshine, or asks what I’ve eaten, or tells me he’s proud of me for something small. Little moments that feel intimate, paired with a fact I know and he doesn’t: that even if there were feelings on both sides, they’d hit the same wall mine already hit a long time ago.
I haven’t said anything to him. I don’t think I’m going to.
Here’s my most honest reasoning, the part I don’t say out loud to anyone: this might genuinely be the most emotionally comfortable a “relationship” has ever felt for me. I get the warmth. I get to feel wanted, complimented, thought about every day. I get a version of romantic attention without ever having to be fully known, fully vulnerable, or fully committed. No risk of rejection, because nothing’s ever been said. No risk of heartbreak, because nothing’s ever been promised.
It’s a full emotional experience with none of the exposure that usually comes with one.
And everything leading up to this — the shift from occasional to daily, the nicknames, the “beautiful,” the “proud of you,” the asking what I ate — makes me wonder if it’s the same thing for him. If he’s getting some version of the same comfort I am. Closeness without the vulnerability of naming it. Warmth without the risk of it being unrequited, because nothing was ever technically on the table to reject.
Maybe that’s exactly why neither of us has said anything. Maybe naming it would either confirm something we’re not ready to build, or kill something that’s easier to keep soft and undefined. As long as it stays unspoken, it can be whatever either of us needs it to be on a given day — friendship, almost-something, or nothing at all.
I don’t have a neat ending for this one. There’s no twist, no confession, no moment where everything comes together or falls apart. It’s just still happening, exactly like this, every single day.
Some days that feels like enough. I get to enjoy someone’s attention, feel a little bit adored, without having to risk anything real.
But some days — usually the quiet ones, right after he’s called me sweetheart or asked if I ate — I catch myself wondering if I’m choosing this because it genuinely feels good, or because it’s safer than wanting something that could actually be taken away.
I don’t have an answer yet. I’m not sure I’m in a hurry to find one.
I just know that the fantasy already ended once, quietly, in a conversation that wasn’t even about me. And I still haven’t figured out whether staying here, in this soft, undefined place, is peace — or just a very comfortable way of not moving at all.
