I had a plan for my mother-in-law’s attempt to upstage me at my wedding. What I hadn’t prepared for was my groom asking me to let her. With our guests waiting and his mother refusing to back down, I asked him one question he couldn’t put off answering.
I loved my wedding dress. For weeks, I pictured Gerald seeing it for the first time.
Then his mother walked into our venue wearing an identical one.
Not just a white dress, or a dress that looked a bit like my gown; identical!
It wasn’t the first time she’d tried to upstage me, but I decided right then that it would be the last time I put up with it.
Not just a white dress
I’d spent years trying to get along with Gerald’s mother, Belinda.
If he praised my cooking, she reminded him whose recipes he grew up on.
If he bought me flowers, she said he used to bring her bigger bouquets.
I usually laughed it off. Then, later, in the car, I’d tell Gerald it hurt.
“I’ll say something next time,” he’d promise, squeezing my knee.
I’d spent years trying to get along with Gerald’s mother
I wanted to believe him.
I loved Gerald, and I hated going into family dinners braced for a fight.
But Belinda just never quit.
At our engagement dinner, Belinda talked about how difficult it was to “lose her son.”
Then she said the venue was “too modest,” called the flowers “inappropriate,” and asked if we’d created the seating chart by names out of a hat.
Belinda just never quit.
When she tried to change our cake to chocolate, Gerald finally dug in.
“We already chose the cake, Mom,” he said. “We’re not reopening it.”
“But Gerald! Chocolate is my favorite; you know that.”
“But it’s OUR wedding cake, Mom.”
She asked to speak to him alone. He was quieter when he returned.
She tried to change our cake to chocolate.
“Are we still getting our cake?” I asked.
“Of course,” he said.
I was so relieved I almost cried in the parking lot.
“I promise I won’t let her dictate our wedding. Or our marriage,” Gerald said, pulling me close.
At my final fitting, Nina, my maid of honor, took photos while I practiced walking with the train.
I loved the neckline and lace sleeves. I couldn’t wait for Gerald to see me.
“I promise I won’t let her dictate our wedding. Or our marriage,”
A month before the wedding, Gerald showed his mother one of Nina’s photos. Belinda looked at it for a long time.
Too long.
“That’s certainly a… bold choice,” she said.
I felt that sentence in my stomach.
She was up to something; I just knew it.
“That’s certainly a… bold choice,”
A week later, I asked what she planned to wear.
She smiled before answering.
“Oh, don’t worry. You’ll see.”
Maybe I was being paranoid, but I knew Belinda well enough not to ignore that feeling.
A few days before the wedding, I spoke privately with Nina and our planner, Simone. Between us, we made a plan.
I asked what she planned to wear.
“Please keep it discreet,” I told them. “I want everyone to be able to enjoy the wedding.”
Nina squeezed my hand.
“I’ll stay close. Just tell me what you need.”
On the morning itself, Nina helped me into the gown, button by tiny button.
My phone buzzed.
We made a plan.
It was Gerald:
I can’t wait to marry you.
I read it twice and finally relaxed. I let myself enjoy the day.
Until Belinda arrived.
She was one of the last guests to enter. At first, all I saw was that she’d worn a white dress.
Belinda arrived.
Then I recognized the neckline… the lace sleeves. She even had a train!
My mother-in-law had come to my wedding wearing an exact copy of MY wedding dress!
Heads turned toward her, then back to me.
My face burned. I looked down at the lace over my wrists, suddenly wishing nobody was looking at either of us.
Then I caught Simone’s eye and nodded.
Heads turned toward her, then back to me.
She approached Belinda.
“Oh dear, there seems to have been a misunderstanding about the dress code. If you’ll please come with me, I can help you change before you join the ceremony, Ma’am.”
Simone gestured to a navy formal dress on a hanger beside the private changing room.
I watched Belinda’s smile drain away and knew the real fight was just beginning.
She approached Belinda.
“What the hell is THIS?!” Belinda roared.
All the guests turned to stare. I saw phones being lifted, and panicked.
I got there before Belinda could say anything else.
“I arranged this, Belinda,” I said. “In case someone showed up dressed inappropriately.”
Her eyes snapped to mine.
“What the hell is THIS?!”
“Oh, so you planned to humiliate me at my son’s wedding?”
“What? No, I…”
I wanted to fight, to point out how insane this was, but I wanted to save my wedding more.
“I’ll come in with you,” I offered. “We can get you changed before the ceremony starts.”
Simone opened the changing-room door. For a moment, I could almost picture us getting back to the wedding.
“Oh, so you planned to humiliate me at my son’s wedding?”
Belinda looked out at the guests, who were still staring at us.
“Don’t worry about them,” Simone said soothingly. “This is just a little outfit mix-up. We don’t have to explain anything else.”
“An outfit mix-up?” Belinda pointed at the navy dress. “You picked out a hideous dress for me behind my back, and now you want to force me to wear it!”
“This is just a little outfit mix-up.”
The guests were whispering now.
Several of them were definitely recording this on their phones. Great. My wedding was turning into a crazy viral video.
Belinda lifted her chin. “I won’t be ordered to wear something chosen to make me look awful.”
I felt tears pricking my eyes. The plan I’d thought was so clever was falling apart in front of me.
That was when Gerald came hurrying in, drawn by the noise.
My wedding was turning into a crazy viral video.
He took one look at the two of us, white lace to white lace, and stopped cold.
“Mom,” he said. “Why did you buy the same dress?”
Hope jumped in my chest.
He saw it. I didn’t have to explain a thing.
“It’s harmless,” Belinda said, waving a hand. “Everyone knows who the bride is.”
“Why did you buy the same dress?”
“We have an alternative dress,” Simone told him.
“Please use the changing room,” Gerald said.
Belinda pursed her lips, and fury glittered in her eyes. She stepped close to him and dropped her voice.
I was standing near enough to hear every word.
Fury glittered in her eyes.
“Be very careful, Gerald. You know what I said would happen.”
Gerald’s mouth tightened. He glanced at the waiting guests, then at me. I could see him thinking.
Then he let out a sigh.
“Can’t we just get through the ceremony?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You just asked her to change. You know this isn’t right.”
“Be very careful, Gerald. You know what I said would happen.”
“She’s upset, Elena. We’re running late.”
I pulled him aside so we could speak more privately.
“Do you remember what you promised me after the cake? You said you wouldn’t let her dictate our wedding.”
“This is different.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “People are watching.”
“That’s not why it’s different. What did she mean by that warning?”
I pulled him aside
“We’ll talk about it afterward.” He took my hand. “Please. Trust me. Just let this one thing go.”
Afterward. When the vows were said, and cousin Beth was posting this all over her socials.
I glanced over at Nina.
She mouthed “Now?”
She was asking about Plan C, the plan I’d made just in case Plan B failed.
“What did she mean by that warning?”
But Plan C would end everything. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go there yet.
I opened my mouth to give Gerald one last chance to fix this, but Belinda stepped forward and hooked her arms through his.
“I’ll tell you what. Why don’t we take photos so long? Give the bride a moment to collect herself.”
Belinda waved to our photographer, who was taking pictures near the entrance.
But Plan C would end everything.
The photographer approached and lifted his camera, then noticed me standing a few feet away.
He frowned.
“Uh… is this the bride, or…?”
And that was the last straw.
“No,” I said. “We’re not doing that.”
The photographer approached
Belinda’s hand tightened around his arm.
“They’re ordinary mother-and-son photos,” Belinda snapped.
“Then you don’t need my wedding dress for them.”
“Elena,” Gerald murmured. “Lower your voice.”
“No. Which bride are you choosing, Gerald?” My voice shook. “Me or your mother?”
“They’re ordinary mother-and-son photos,”
“You’re making me choose between people I love.”
Belinda sniffed.
“Don’t indulge this, Gerald. She’ll calm down once the ceremony starts.”
I turned my head.
“Nina. Plan C.”
Nina didn’t ask a single question. She was already moving toward the bridal room.
“Nina. Plan C.”
Simone came up beside me, calm as ever.
“Elena, would you like the ceremony preparations paused?”
“Yes.”
Simone halted the procession lineup and spoke to the officiant. Guests began turning in their chairs.
“What’s going on? What’s Plan C?” Gerald asked.
“Elena, would you like the ceremony preparations paused?”
Nina reappeared with my bag.
“Plan C is me leaving,” I said. “I won’t walk into a marriage where our agreements only last until your mother threatens you.”
Through the doorway, I could see the flowers and chairs I’d spent months choosing. My hands were shaking. I wanted to marry him. I wanted him to give me a reason to stay.
Gerald reached for my hand. “Elena, you don’t understand…”
“Then explain it. What did she threaten you with?”
I wanted him to give me a reason to stay.
“Please…” he pleaded. “I’ll explain everything later. Let’s just…”
I stepped away and headed for the exit.
Nina moved beside me as I gathered my train. I made it a few steps toward the lobby before Gerald followed.
“Wait. Elena, please.”
Gerald followed.
I stopped at the lobby doorway, close enough to hear Belinda behind us.
“Let her go, Gerald. You’re better off without her.”
Gerald froze. Then he turned back toward his mother.
“You’re wrong, Mom.” Gerald’s voice was different now. Lower. Steady. “You don’t speak for me. If you want to stay, you change.”
Belinda stared at him. Then she said it out loud.
“You’re wrong, Mom.”
“If you let her walk all over me, don’t expect to inherit anything. I meant what I said. I’ll write you out of my will.”
I looked at Gerald.
“That’s what she was holding over you? That’s what you were weighing my happiness and dignity against?”
“I meant what I said.”
He swallowed.
The answer was written in the shame on his face.
“He is entitled to protect his future,” Belinda said sharply. “And you are trying to take it from him.”
Gerald turned to her. I held my breath.
“Then leave it to someone else,” he said. “You still need to change if you’re staying.”
The answer was written in the shame on his face.
“I’ll leave,” Belinda threatened. “And I’ll tell the whole family why.”
“That’s your decision,” Gerald said. “I’ve made mine.”
Belinda looked daggers at me.
Then she swept out in my dress. Gerald let her go.
The door clicked shut. I let out a breath, but I couldn’t put my bag down yet.
“I’ve made mine.”
“Do you still want to marry me today?” Gerald asked.
“Do you blame me,” I said, “for what she might do with the inheritance?”
“No. The threat was her decision.”
His voice cracked. “Asking you to put up with the humiliation was mine.”
“When did she first threaten you?” I asked. “What did you agree to?”
“Do you still want to marry me today?”
“After the cake argument. She said if I kept letting you shut her out of our decisions, she’d leave me nothing. I didn’t agree to change the cake. I told her I’d talk to you.”
“You didn’t.”
“No. I thought I could keep her happy without dragging you into it.”
“Did you know about the gown?”
“No. Not until I walked in, I swear.”
“I told her I’d talk to you.”
I looked toward the changing room.
The navy dress was still hanging there.
“I can’t spend our marriage finding out the hidden reasons I’m supposed to give way,” I said.
“I know. And I don’t want you to.” He took a breath. “If you don’t want to go through with it, I’ll tell everyone myself. I’ll explain the postponement.”
I looked into his eyes. I still wanted to marry him, but could I? After all this?
“Did you know about the gown?”
“I need a few minutes with Nina.”
He nodded and stepped away.
In the bridal room, I set my bag on a chair and finally cried. Nina sat beside me with tissues.
“Want a ride home?” she asked.
“I don’t know. I still want to marry him. I’m just so angry.”
“I need a few minutes with Nina.”
“I can get the car. Or we can sit here.”
“Sit. Please.”
She settled back beside me.
From the other room came the muffled scrape of a chair. I wondered how long people would wait before they started going home.
“I can get the car. Or we can sit here.”
“I want today back,” I said. “The way it was this morning.”
Nina handed me another tissue.
“What if that’s why I stay? Because I can’t bear to lose all of it?”
She glanced at the bag.
“I’ll take you home whenever you ask. The guests can wait.”
I sat with my hands in my lap.
“I want today back,”
I could picture leaving with her.
I could also picture Gerald at the front, waiting for an answer he had finally stopped trying to give for me.
I wanted to see him. I wanted to tell him I was still hurt and find out whether he could hear it without asking me to make things easier.
After a while, I asked Nina for the mirror.
I could also picture Gerald at the front
“I’m not going to pretend this didn’t happen,” I said.
“You don’t have to.”
I put the tissues down, picked up my bag, and stood.
I walked out and found him waiting by the window.
“I’m going to marry you,” I said. “And afterward, we’re going to talk about all of it. Including the threats you kept from me.”
“I’m not going to pretend this didn’t happen,”
“Whenever you’re ready,” he said.
Together we told Simone to resume.
The rest went quickly.
Gerald went to wait at the front.
Nina stayed with me while Simone checked that everyone was in place.
Together we told Simone to resume.
That was when I noticed I was still holding my train over one arm, gathered up from when I’d been ready to leave.
“Ready?” Nina asked.
I nodded and lowered my train.
She smoothed it out. I waited until the lace settled behind me.
Then I walked toward Gerald.
I was still holding my train over one arm,
